US Open Week. This is traditionally the toughest of the Majors, so I’m making no predictions (not in print anyway). Making that prediction has gotten a lot more difficult because both Tiger and McIlroy seem to have come into some form, along with a whole host of younger Americans.
What is usually true of this Major is that you are going to have to keep the ball in the Fairway if you are going to have any chance of winning. When you pause for a moment and think about the different challenges of the first three Majors - Masters (Putting), US Open (Tee shot accuracy), The Open Championship (strategy and avoiding the bunkers / deep rough) - you get a sense for just how complete Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are as golfers. They were able to dominate these events, showing just how good those different aspects of their games could be on a regular basis.
But back to the US Open and Driving accuracy this week. Why don’t you spend the next month tracking the relationship between Driving accuracy and your score? Record the number of Fairways you hit off the tee, and work that out as a percentage and place your score alongside it. Pick out a day and have a round where you take out the Hybrid or Fairway Wood off the tee and get the ball in play more often and see if the loss of distance has a material impact on your score.
Review your scores and work out how much of an impact it makes on your game if you dial back a little on distance and focus a bit more on making sure your 2nd shot is played off the short grass.

if you want to play off the Fairway more often.

John
