This weekend The Links Golf Club will play host to the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union and the 2012 Men's County Championships. Starting at 8am on Saturday, the Championship will be played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes of the leading players for the final day's play on the Sunday. This is the most prestigious of all the County events and as such has attracted nearly 70 of the best golfers from the area. The standard of play is expected to be high but with a very mixed weather forecast and the fact that, due to the wet spring, there is rough on our course for the first time in a number of years, our head greenkeeper Rob and his team will be able to present to the field a stiff examination.
The Links this year will have 8 players representing the club, and we wish them all the best of luck. Spectators will be welcome so please come along and add your support to the event, you will not only see how the best County players negotiate our course but you may learn a few new shots into the bargain.
Diamond Jubilee Weekend
I thoroughly enjoyed the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations over the weekend and really felt proud to be British. Although the weather didn't stop the Queen, The Hole in One Cup scheduled for Sunday was cancelled. Everyone, it seemed, turned out for the Stableford on Tuesday though, with around 66 competitors taking part. Congratulations to Chris Eyre on winning on count back with 40 points from Tony Marshall. Chris has been in excellent form in the past few weeks, winning three stablefords and also winning the 10 hole Social evening on Wednesday with 26 points. Best lady in the Diamond Jubilee was Sarah Reardon with 34 points and best Junior was Claire Tuttle with 28 points.
Tiger Wins 'Big Jack's Tournament'
Did you see Tiger equalling Jack Nicklaus's record of PGA Tour victories wins last week by ironically winning Jack's own tournament at Muirfeild Village GC in Ohio? The shot that everyone has been talking about was his 20 yard chip in at the 16th for a birdie. Tiger's ball was in fairly deep rough looking at a downhill shot to the flag with water just beyond the green. Tiger took almost a full backswing with his 60° wedge, the ball came of the clubface slowly and landed in about the only spot it could to stay on the green. The ball then tracked the slope and into the cup. This was then followed by the famous Tiger fist pump that we haven't seen for a while. Click here to watch it, just in case you haven't seen it.
