Greetings from John Sharkey
The Links Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

The Ladies Mail on Sunday team began their 2014 journey last Sunday when they convincingly beat a team from Ely City 4 ½ - ½ in the first round of this seasons knock out competition. Team members Marcella Tuttle, Sarah Greenall,Sarah Reardon, Jane Monk and Lynn Lambert all got off to a very good start with the half point only shared when Sarah Greenall and her opponent agreed to a half in their game as the match had already been decided. Well played ladies and good luck in the next round.

Ladies Bring & Win - Flo Hallam Spoons QC

On Monday this week 34 of our ladies braved the weather to play in the Flo Hallam Spoons/Bring & win competition. A 9am shot gun start saw Winner Janey Readman with a very good score in the conditions of 34 points just pip Pat Wallace with 33 points into 2nd place. Lady Captain, Lesley presented Janey with the Spoons which where presented to the club by Past Ladies Captain Flo Hallam in 1979. Well played Janey.

Links Ladies pro-Am

Calling all Silver handicap division players, we now have a date for our Ladies Pro Am, which is Thursday May 1st teeing off at 2pm. The event is played over 10 holes with prize giving in the clubhouse immediately following play. The cost of the event is £4 which covers tea/coffee and prizes. Richard, Jonny and myself will need three lady members each to make up the teams (9 ladies in total). The teams will be drawn on the day. The places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so be quick and get your name down.

The Links Race to Dubai

Links pair Malcolm Simmons and Toby Crisp are on their own Race to Dubai! They have progressed through 5 rounds in the Dubai Matchplay Tournament and have qualified to play in the Regional finals at The Forest of Arden Golf Course on the 17th April. The top six pairs from thirty at the Forets of Arden will qualify for an all expenses paid trip for the three day grand final in Dubai which is to be covered by Sky TV. Good luck guys!

Jonny leads qualifiers for the PGA East Region order of merit event.

Jonathan Sharkey (Links, Newmarket) and Charlie Luther (Hertfordshire G&CC) each signed for a three-under-par 68 at North Weald to head qualifying for the East Region Championship.

The pair led from a field of 70 players trying to qualify through to the June 18-19 event at Essendon Country Club.

Twenty four hours earlier, Sharkey had also finished third in pre-qualifying for the Weston Homes Plc/Bishop's Stortford Classic.

Jonny found himself one-over-par after 9 holes, but a superb burst of four birdies in five holes from the 12th saw him out in front. Well played Jonny!

Juniors win the Hensby Trophy

The Junior team this week played their annual match against the NAGS Section for the Hensby Trophy. Junior Captain David Marris led his team to a 3-2 victory against a very competitive NAGS side. The Juniors looked resplendent in their new team shirts.

Strengthen your woods line-up by filling the gaps

When I see a golfer with a full custom-fitted set of woods in their bag, I know they have considered how far they hit each club. Often we can neglect this part of the game at the top end of our bag which costs us valuable shots. Some simple fine-tuning in this area can work wonders.
