Last Friday Tricia and I were very proud to accompany Jonny to Birmingham University for his graduation day, having passed his PGA degree with a merit. Jonny was presented with his certificate by Bernard Gallagher OBE, who spoke to the new graduates about his early golfing career. He recalled the moment when he played in the 1969 Ryder Cup at Birkdale as a young assistant professional. The match which will always be remembered for the conceded putt that Jack Nicklaus allowed Tony Jacklin, an act that I'm not sure would happen today.
The level of training assistants receive today from the PGA in conjunction with Birmingham University continues to improve each year. Subjects introduced in recent years to the syllabus include sports science and business management.
The standard of the degree, which is recognised worldwide gives, graduates an in-depth knowledge of all the areas of the game enabling them to deliver with confidence a first class service to customers.
Hole in one
Congratulations to Mike Corbett who in this week's competition had a hole in one in. Mike playing with Russell Bryan holed out with his tee shot at the 17th in last Saturday's stableford. Unfortunately for Mike the hole in one pot in the Two's Club had recently been emptied. Mike it's not about the money it's the glory. Memories will last a life time. Well played.
Drone over the Links. A look at course that you may not have seen before!
I have received an email with a video attached from Philip Fuller of an aerial video view of the golf course here at The Links. A big thank you to Philip son of members John and Thelma of Southgate Funeral Directors fame . Philip has a drone which he flew over the course a few weeks ago capturing video of our wonderful course and clubhouse.
When club fitting for the correct lie angle with irons, your objective is to ensure that the iron's sole is flush with the ground at impact. If the lie angle is either too upright or too flat, accuracy and distance will suffer.
If the clubhead is toe up at impact, an indication that the lie angle is to upright the heel of the club will contact the ground first making it very difficult to hit accurate shots from the centre of the clubface and greatly effecting ball speed and distance.
If you would like to check how suitable your own clubs are for you, it only takes 10 minutes to do please book an appointment with anyone of the The Pro Shop Team.
