Club news

Links Ladies create some Links history!

Cast your mind back to 1977. James Callaghan was the Prime Minister. We had petrol at just 79p per gallon, inflation was at 15.8% and interest rates 7%. The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, the film Saturday Night Fever was released at the cinema and The Links GC Ladies last won the Mary Cole Rose Bowl!

Congratulations Sarah Greenall, Marcella Tuttle and Margaret Beckley on winning this year's event after a 39 years of wait. This is a County ladies 18-hole strokeplay event with teams entered from all clubs in the county. Each team consists of 3 players and ALL scores are to count.

The event this year was held at Girton GC. Marcella T was disappointed to open up with her score of 78 but was followed by a magnificent 70 from Sarah G and 71 from Margaret B. Our aggregate score was 219 and we won by 1 shot from Gog Magog and The Cambridgeshire who had 220. Many thanks to the caddies on the day Lesley Ellis, Karen Cook and Ladies Captain Lynn Lambert for their support and help keeping us all calm and collected. Lynn made a fab speech and was presented with the trophy by the County President. It just shows that teamwork really does work!

Here's a comment from Lynn:

"I am absolutely thrilled that The Links have won the Mary Cole Rose Bowl. It's been a long time coming as we last won it in 1977 and it's a pretty nerve-racking event for the team. A Ladies' Captain always wants to try and win a County event in their year so it's even more special for me. It's all in the teamwork!".

Links Ladies Rule!

Sarah G and Marcella win the County ladies scratch foursomes matchplay knockout

The final was played at The Cambridgeshire, Bar Hill. Sarah G & Marcella took on Justine Voss and Morag McHutcheon from Saffron Walden. There were a few dramatic moments during the match with Sarah holing a 98 yd pitching shot on the 11th hole for an eagle. On the 16th hole with Sarah & Marcella being 1up, a lost ball off the tee and a 5 mins search for their ball resulted in them taking 3 of the tee only to find that their first ball was on the fairway all the time!! And to cap it all the 6 spectators knew - they thought they were looking for the opponent's ball! Unbelievably Sarah & Marcella won the hole anyway with a 6 so it wasn't disastrous. Interestingly though the referee said that as the ball hadn't been identified before the 5 mins search time was up the ball was deemed lost, even though it was on the fairway and others knew it was there so it wasn't lost at all!!

So after a lot of excitement Sarah & Marcella won the match and the trophy on the 17th hole. They last won it in 2012. Well played girls!

Goddard Cup This Sunday

Just a reminder that the Men's Scratch Team will be playing a team from The Gog Magog GC at Saffron Walden GC on Sunday for the Goddard Cup. This is an 8 man team event with 4 foursome matches in the morning followed by 8 singles in the afternoon. Spectators are most welcome to come along and support the boys at anytime on the day. Good luck to Ed Dimambro, Scratch Team Captain, and his team it would cap a great double for them after winning the Scratch league earlier in the year.

The Great Links Fun Run raises £4564.11!

The Great Links Fun Run which took place on 10th July was a huge success. The organisational team are delighted to announce that the total amount raised £4564.11 on the day and that every penny will go to the Addenbrookes Breast Cancer Unit.

This is a fantastic amount which far exceeded our expectations and we would like to thank all those who took part, the marshals, those that gave sponsorship money and those that gave their time, lent us equipment and donated the food. The Great Links Fun Run Organisation Team would like to thank again everyone for your support.
