Pros news

John is back!

John returned from his trip to Florida and has brought back some interesting gadgets for coaching from the PGA show. He is especially excited about some putting aids to help with posture and clubface alignment. Also with the aid of a new camera we will be able offer instant feedback with an high resolution video image of your swing.

As you know he has played some top quality golf courses during his trip but to finish off the he played the PGA National at Palm Beach a course that will be hosting the Honda Classic on the 23-27 February. The course was remodelled by Jack Nicklaus and has a famous stretch of particularly difficult holes called 'The Bear Trap' the 15th,16th and 17th. These holes are protected by large strategically positioned water hazards. Ask John when you see him if he managed to survive the bear trap!

Back to work on Thursday John came straight back down to earth with a trip with Linda to Barnham Broom GC near Norwich to view the Under Armour and other ladies clothing ranges for next Autumn /Winter. Welcome back John!

Club news

A Tartan Night

At the club over 85 members and their guests enjoyed a warm celebration of Rabbie Burns on Saturday evening 28th January. The Men's Captain joked that 'House' had even gone to the expense of installing a new tartan carpet for the occasion wondering what decoration feat might be put on for St Patrick's evening.

The evening started with the ceremonious piping-in of the Mens and Ladies Captains. The usual rituals were observed with the Selkirk Grace and 'Address to a Haggis' - Great chieftain o'the puddin-race!' offered by President, Andy Wylie. Robin Hay, a pedigree Scottish friend of the Captain, gave an amusing account of the poet's life subtly interweaving various developments in the landscape that post-dated the poet in his Toast to the Immortal Memory. The Vice Captains, Hamish Fleming and Lesley Ellis, toasted the lassies and laddies in a good humoured dual. Hamish managing to link golf, politics and the pre-eminent place of women in society together to form a manifesto speech, encouraging the men to accept the inevitable and indomitable power of the ladies. All to be proved by a well-crafted poem carrying many effortless punches by Lesley.

After the traditional Scottish menu of Cock-a-leekie soup, Haggis, Neeps & Tatties, the revellers fuelled by whiskey danced to the music of Clutching Straws. The evening came to a close with a rowdy Auld Lang Syne in a swirl of tartan that seemed to bless and caress the new carpet.

Junior news

Luis Brown

On Sunday 23rd January Max Weaver started his year off as Junior Captain in his Drive-in competition. It was well supported with 16 juniors in attendance, especially as it was -2 and frosted over, but that didn't stop our hardy junior golfers at all going for the first piece of silverware of the year.

If you were thinking the cold conditions would suit the older hardened juniors you would be wrong as one of our youngest junior members, Luis Brown, at 10 years old stole the show with an amazing 43 points.

This is Luis' first trophy to start his collection and knowing Luis he would have been smiling like a Cheshire cat. Congratulations Luis hopefully that's the first of many.
