Ladies Jean Wilkinson Team Doing Well
Our ladies played their 3rd match in the inter-county Jean Wilkinson league this week away at the Gog Magog GC. They managed to win 3 points from the 7 matches played, which when added to the 6 matches they won at home against the Gogs just a few weeks earlier, means they are still ahead in the overall standings.
Ladies Captain, Marcella would like to thank her team: Jude Hole, Margaret Beckley, Barbara Coe, Sue Hide, Jane Monk, Irene Fretwell and Jane Blake. Thanks also to the caddies: Sarah Greenall, Pat Dugdale, Edie Douglas, Teresa Locke and Laura Tuttle.
Their next match is at home on the 6th July against the ladies of St Neots GC.
The County Scene - Links Players Make Hay While The Sun Shone
In glorious sunny weather, The Links Newmarket hosted the County Division 3 and High Handicappers competition and The Links Ladies took full advantage of their local knowledge scooping four of the five prizes.
In the Division 3 meeting Pauline Bond (Links) played some stunning golf to win the trophy with a magnificent score of 45 points from Janice Mansfield (Links) in second spot with a very good score of 43 points.
The High Handicap Shield winner was Links player Sue Harrison, who took top spot with 30 points from Sally Peyton also (Links) in second place with 29 points on countback.
All our ladies have been working really hard on their games this year and the Pro Shop are delighted to see it starting to pay off. Well done ladies!
CAGU Seniors Championships - Gog Magog
Club member, John Yuill, narrowly missed out on a CAGU Men's Senior Championship title when his impressive 2 over par 72 at the Gog Magog was pipped by just 1 shot by Jeremy Baldwin from Nene Park. Another notable Links score at the Championships came from Richard Douglas who had 75, 5 over par.
Well played chaps!
Lombard Pro Am at Thetford
I had a great time playing with club member Dan Clemence in the East Region Lombard Trophy qualifier at Thetford on Thursday. The Lombard is the biggest Pro Am event in Great Britain.
There are around 10 area finals up and down the country, culminating in a Grand Final in Portugal later in the year.
Dan qualified to play in the East region qualifier by winning the Guide Dogs for the Blind Medal at the club back in May.
Captains' Week
It is festival time at the club once again with the busiest week of the year now upon us. Captains' Week kicks off on Friday with the Captains' Summer Ball, our premier social event of the year.
Good luck to both Kevin McDonnell and Marcella Tuttle for a great week ahead, as they celebrate their respective Captain's Days on Sunday and next Tuesday. Let's hope the sun shines and everyone has a most enjoyable week's golf. Check out the club's website for full details of all the events.
Rain
The drought that we have been experiencing over the last few weeks, finally broke with a number of spectacular thunder storms on Tuesday. The course will now definitely play rather differently for Captain's Day this Sunday. Have a look at the videos I took during the peak of the storm; see how much rain fell and then check out the second clip taken 30 minutes later. We are so lucky to have a golf course that drains so well, I'm sure you will agree.
