Sarah Wins May Harvey Flag Competition.

The May Harvey Flag trophy was played on Monday with 18 of our ladies taking part. They encountered a bit of everything weather-wise, the odd shower, sunshine and dark clouds. The competition is a non-qualifying Medal with a difference. Each player is allowed 73 shots plus their handicap and once a player has reached that total they stick their named flag in the place their ball came to rest on their last shot.

Clearly if players play to their handicap then their flag would be in the 18th hole. Three players managed this Marcella Tuttle, Carol Wigham and Jackie Ewing. However, there were 3 players who still had shots in hand and went up the 1st hole.

Pat Wallace finished with her drive up the first, Ann Jessett had 3 shots left and her 3rd shot finished three-quarters the way up the hole, but the winner was Sarah Greenall, who ended up on the apron of the 1st green.

We don't know much about May Harvey, except that the trophy was presented in 1962. if anyone knows anything more about the competition or May Harvey please enlighten us.

Tom & His Boys March On!

Team captain Tom Sharp and his team continued their journey in this year’s CAGU team knockout competition at Lakeside Lodge last weekend. They have now reached the final which will be played next month.

Well played and good luck in the final to Tom and team members Nick Crozier, Phil Neal, Dave Phipps, Malcolm Simmons, Paddy McConville Swanton and Mark Canham.

The Boys Doing Us Proud

Last weekend the juniors were out representing the club. On Saturday they played in the final of the CAGU Friendly Cup at Saffron Walden Golf Club against Peterborough Milton Golf Club. The Links team consisted of Junior Captain Max Weaver, Vice Captain Dan Wiseman, Dan Knight, Tyler Weaver, Teddy Hall and Alex Cowdrey.

The match went down to the last hole, being all square in the final match after Tyler Weaver holed a 40ft birdie putt on the 17th hole. Unfortunately the young pairing of Teddy Hall and Tyler Weaver couldn’t rally another birdie to overcome the Peterborough boys on the 18th. The level of golf and sportsmanship of the boys on the day was a credit to the club and they should be proud of their achievements.

On Sunday the Juniors were away too. Every Links boy had to give shots, so they were up against it. However, they managed to grind out a well-earned half from the match, with 3 matches going to the final hole. This leaves the juniors 7 out of 8 in the league this year.

Junior organiser and professional, Jonny Sharkey attended both matches over the weekend. He said;

“The boys were a credit to the club. They never gave up and kept competing to the end. Unfortunately the experience of the older opposition in the final just gave them the edge. However the quality of golf produced from our boys was certainly worthy of next year pushing scratch team selection.

The average age of the team this weekend was just under 14 years old, which is much younger than any of the other clubs they came up against this year. Most of the opposition are of the ages of 16-18 years old, which gives us plenty of encouragement looking forward to see how successful this group of juniors can be.”
