In Sunday’s final, Phil & Ben started poorly as is their trademark, but went on to reverse an early 2 hole deficit to win 2 up. Mark and Nick marched on to win their match with a modest 7 up victory, shooting an impressive 4 over gross. In Tom and Paddy’s match, the luck of the Irish seemed to have deserted them, trailing 2 down with 3 to play. Tom’s thinned 6 iron to the par 3 16th, left Paddy an 8 footer that he duly rolled in to trigger a remarkable comeback. As the first 2 groups gathered around the 18th green, news filtered through that both remaining matches were heading to Ely, and a potential play-off.
Looking back up the 18th, Paddy and Tom disappeared from sight, only to pop out by the 1st tee box some 40 yards from the green, while Ely at the back of the green were looking odds on to make bogey. Tom wiped his brow, and launched his 56 deg wedge into the stiff breeze to a short sided pin, the ball dropped from the sky to leave Paddy a 4 footer this time to snatch victory. With nerves of steel, the friendliest golfer you’ll ever meet rattled the back of the hole, and victory was Newmarket’s.
In the final pairing, David and Malcom were pipped at the end 2 down, against tough opponents. The contest will be played again next year, this time with Newmarket defending their title.
