Burns Night at The Links. In an evening of Terrific Tartan Turnout, 90 members and guests celebrated the life of Robbie Burns, the great Bard of Ayrshire. The ceremonial piping-in of the Men’s and Ladies’ Captains, Hamish Fleming and Lesley Ellis, was followed by the Selkirk Grace and Address to the Haggis by President Andy Wylie in full kilted regalia. Next came Robin Hay, equally resplendent, who spoke amusingly about the great Ploughman Poet during his “Toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns”. Men’s Vice Captain Chas Vincent then delivered his entertaining and spiky “Toast to the Lassies”, which was swiftly countered by Ladies’ Captain Lesley Ellis, who delivered an excellent response crafted by Vice Captain Jude Hole - who was sunning herself somewhere in India! After a traditional Scottish menu of broth, haggis, neeps and tatties, the dance floor was crammed as the lively music of Clutching Straws filled the clubhouse, and many an amusing Scottish reel ensued. On the stroke of midnight, the evening closed with a splendid rendition of Auld Lang Syne. As ever, the table decorations and flowers were magnificent: a special thank you, therefore, to Carolyn Bangs and Alie Tyers for all their much-appreciated hard work. Thanks also to Amanda and her team behind the bar, and to Chris and his catering team - an excellent job all round!
