CAGU County Men's Championships Last weekend CAGU County Men's Championships were played at The Links. This is an event that Newmarket shares the honour of hosting along with other clubs in the Cambridgeshire region every 4/5 years. There were 50 players starting out on the Saturday which was reduced to just 25 players making the cut for the final 36 holes on the Sunday, which included 5 from Newmarket. There was a good turnout of Links members supporting the championships and a number of success stories to boot. Least of all from our Club Secretary, Matt Hartley who was in with a shout of a top 5 position, only to just run out of steam in the last round. There were 3 members in the top 8 who were in the prizes, with the highest placed being David Marris who closed with a 2-under par last round to finish 4th on 295. Another notable player was Junior member George Whitehall, who at 14 was the youngest in the field and averaged 77 for his 4 rounds and a 308 total. A special mention also to Links member Tareq Moubarak who displayed great consistency over the weekend and finished in the prizes in 6th spot reducing his handicap to 3.5. Finally, Adam Ranner continued his great season making the cut and finishing in 17th place, a just reward for all his hard work through the winter. Alfie Guy-Pinkney another of our juniors was also in the prizes winning the January Cup for the best handicap score on the Saturday. All players and County officials were had a lot of very positive comments about the welcome and hospitality they received from The Links and the condition of the course. A big thank you also to the members who gave up their weekend game for this event to happen it was much appreciated.
