Club news

Can Dan and Jonny win trip to Portugal to represent The Links? Lombard National Pro Am

In 1979 the inaugural PGA National Pro-Am Championship was first played with the Grand Final being played at Penina Resort Portugal. The tournament has continued to go from strength to strength since then and has become the biggest pro-am event in Europe.

Every season the event attracts entries from more than 1,000 clubs from all over the UK and has had seen more than 100,000 amateurs taking part since that first event in Portugal.

This Thursday, member Dan Stoodley and Jonny will be teeing it up in our regional qualifier at Thetford and getting the Links campaign off and running. Dan qualified to play by winning the monthly medal at the club three weeks ago. Best of luck chaps!

Captain’s Day here again!

Best of luck to Hamish Fleming for a successful Captain’s Day on Sunday. Once again, an early start with the first players teeing off at 5am allowing a field of 150 plus to all get around in time for the Trophy presentations at 4.30pm.

The weather looks set fair for a fabulous weekend which is kicked off by the Summer Ball on Friday evening.

Jonny and Dan Stoodley finished tied 6th in The Lombard qualifier on Thursday at Thetford GC, they held the lead for quite some time, before being overtaken by the later starters.

PING Demo Day

We have 3 half hour slots still available on our PING Demo Day on Wednesday 4th July held between 12pm - 4pm.

This is a great opportunity to demo some of the more obscure clubs in their range such as lob wedges, left handed and putters etc.

Junior Linksters Academy - Par 3 and World Cup Social

Jonny and Rich hosted 22 of our new academy juniors last weekend. The new Linksters Academy has been put in place to offer potential junior golfers a clear pathway into golf and membership of the club. You will notice that on the practice ground next to the 18th hole, a par 3 approach course has been set up exclusively for academy juniors allowing them to play, learn the rules and prepare them for the main course as they progress. The par 3 course has 7 holes ranging from 40 - 80 yards. It allows our academy juniors to gain confidence by playing and learning the rules and etiquette needed.

After the Par 3 play on Saturday it was then back to clubhouse for more competitions on the putting green and some food and refreshments on the patio with the parents in some beautiful sunshine.

Junior academy

The Junior organiser and committee have created this new junior membership called the 'Links Academy membership’ the benefits of membership include:

Access to the golf course (Blue Tees) on after 2pm mid-week and 4pm on weekends.
Full use of the Par 3 and practice facilities all day
Discount in the bar and kitchen
Chance to gain a handicap

The membership costs just £50 for the year and is limited to 2 years before obtaining full junior membership. If you would like more information on the new membership or know of any children who would benefit from this please contact Jonny Sharkey on jonny@linksgolflab.com.

First one way, now the other

The U.S. Open had everything from the sublime to the ridiculous, and it’s safe to say that the course set-up played a huge part in this. With much of the debate centred around whether the USGA made conditions too tricky or not, we posed this very question to you over the past week on our website poll and here are the results:

75% of you believe the USGA got it wrong at Shinnecock Hills

It really does make for interesting reading. Just a couple of months ago we asked you whether you’d prefer to see 20-under-par win a tournament or two-over-par, and the results were the complete reverse. On that occasion, 82% voted in favour of seeing the world’s best struggle to make a score, which is exactly what happened at the U.S. Open.
