Trip to Southwold

Writing this week’s email from my deckchair on Southwold Beach I couldn’t help but think how good last night’s beer was at The Lord Nelson. For a small town on the Suffolk coast there sure is much to shout about; sandy beaches, multiple pubs, working lighthouse to name a few. However the main attraction which is on everyone’s mind is Adnams Brewery. I’m holding them accountable for our 3 on 1 defeat my wife and I suffered to our sons round Southwold Golf Club!

After a couple of beers in the sun, I was seeing 2 balls flying through the Suffolk skies. Unfortunately the actual ball was the one which found the gorse bushes. Despite this minor blip the whole experience was fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend Southwold and it’s golf course to any eager members searching for the perfect long weekend.

Club news

John’s beard…

A major development over the week has been the re-growth of my beard, which I’ve noticed the ratio of white to brown to hairs has moved in favour of the former. The overall feeling in my household is positive, however, I put it to you the members to determine its future; beard or no beard?!

Pro-Am Team

On a more serious note there has been fantastic golfing news coming out of this week. I’m delighted to report that Jonny’s Pro-Am team conquered the city of Ely with the Links team winning the Ely City Pro-Am with a spectacular 14 Under Par total of 130, winning by 1 from their nearest rivals.

Congratulations to Guy Westcott, Dan Kinight and new member Colin McNaughton who partnered with Jonny on Tuesday. Jonny came in with a 1 over 73 in the individual event. Well done chaps on a great team effort.

Ace day for Jayne!

Continuing on with this week’s successes, we have a hole in one to discuss at the Links!

Congratulations to Jayne Sant-Brown who earlier this week impressively holed out on the 12th. Well done Jayne!

Back to basics

There are any number of online tutorials giving you the 'perfect advice' as to how to cure a specific problem you may have with your game. However, the key to solving most issues in sport (golf included) is to go right back to where it all began - the fundamentals.

Check your fundamentals

The way you set-up to the ball writes the script for the swing. This may be one of the more basic elements to the game but yet it is also one of the most overlooked – and that can be dangerous for your scorecard.

Jack Nicklaus once said:

"If you set up correctly, there's a good chance you'll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you'll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world”

The most beautiful shot in golf

If we were to ask you this question what would you say? We think some of you would say the ‘Tiger stinger’ but a good proportion would say the pitch shot that takes a couple of bounces before stopping to a halt. It looks sensational but how on earth do you play it?
