Greetings from John Sharkey
The Links Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Marc Paskell collect his new clubs.

Marc this week has collected a new set of customised Titleist AP1 irons. Having worked a little with Marc recently on his swing technique and seen some good progress, we thought it was a good time for him to upgrade his equipment to help continue that improvement. Marc's new irons are 1/2" longer and 2 degrees more upright than his old clubs.

He chose Titleist because he preferred the smaller head of the AP1's over some of the other clubs he tried. He decided also to keep his old sand iron and we will lengthen and change the lie angles so it is compatable with his new clubs.

Marc will now have a few games to get used to irons before we have a free follow up session to make sure he is totally satisfied with them and they are behaving themselves.

Remember if you are considering buying a new set of irons it's important to get the set up perfect, so come into the pro shop and one of us will be more than happy to help you out.

Wet weather golf

If you have been out on the Links over the last few weeks you will have experienced difficulty in keeping a good hold on your club in the wet weather that we have been receiving. I have a few tips that might help you with this vital aspect of the game. With wet grips you will experience a loss of power and control so try a few of these ideas

  1. Make sure you have your bag cover in place before you go out and not wait until it starts to rain before you put it on.
  2. Take your headcovers off your woods and hybrids and put them in your bag. They become very wet and you get wet hands and gloves by taking them on and off.
  3. Water collects in the bottom of your bag so if you place a tee peg in the hole at the base of your grips it will help to keep the grips clear of any water.
  4. Take a couple of small towels. Place one on a spoke of your umbrella under the canopy and keep the other one inside your bag.
  5. Keep your golf gloves in a sealed plastic bag and keep in your golf bag.
  6. If your grips are showing signs of wear your performance levels particularly in wet and cold conditions will be significantly reduced. A new soft rubber grip will make a big difference.
  7. Attach your glove to the spokes on the underside of your umbrella between shots.
  8. Use the poor conditions to your advantage, have a positive mental attitude to the conditions and this will give you the edge over a lot of your fellow golfers who are quite often beaten before they start.

By using some of these coping strategies for the wet conditions, hopefully you will maximize your play and enjoyment at this time of the year.

Christmas Decorations

The Christmas decorations are now up in both the clubhouse and Pro Shop in readiness for the festive season.

The first of the very popular Links Golf Club Christmas lunches is to be held this Sunday and is traditionally followed by carols and a good old sing along.

Come and join us also in the Pro Shop for some festive mince pies and drinks on both weekends leading up to Christmas. Check out our Xmas table of gifts and find some inspiration for that special gift.

Even your best drives can go missing with plenty of leaves down and the gloomier weather doesn't help. Playing a yellow ball might not be an option for the traditionalists but if it helps you keep the same ball in play…
