Staff v Committee Match
The end of year festivities continued this week with the annual Staff v Committee match. In memory each year we play for the Sandra Sharp trophy, who many will remember as a very popular steward at the club, and who always enjoyed this occasion. Always a competitive match, the committee won in a very convincing manner this year to redress the balance of results. The committee are now only 4-2 down in the series but more importantly once again the match was played in a fantastic spirit with a lot of laughter and fun from both sides. A big thank you to the greenstaff who supplied hamburgers at the 11th tee and to Dennis and his team for the Chilli and Beef in the clubhouse afterwards.
Roe Cup and Christmas Dinner
Well done to David Marris on winning the Roe Cup last Sunday. The Roe Cup, donated to the club's junior section by Jean and Archie Roe, is played for each Christmas. The competition is played with the use of just 3 clubs and is a fun way to end the competitive year for the junior section. Thank you to Jean and Archie who were both at the meal and hand to present the trophy to David. Also announced at the meal by this year's Vice Captain, Jordy Allen was the name of his Vice Captain to be for 2015 Jack Nunn. David Marris, Junior Captain this year then presented a gift to Jonny Sharkey and David Kirk the junior organisers and thanked them both for their work in looking after the section this year.
Free golf balls!!!
Just like the Easter hunt that we ran earlier in the year, we are giving away golf balls over the weekend for anyone who finds a Xmas bauble tree decoration hidden on the course this weekend. If you find one bring back to the shop to collect your prize.
Reciprocal golf at Pyecombe and The Dyke Brighton
Richard had some time away last week and below is his report from his trip from one of the courses the club has reciprocal arrangement with.
Last week I had a trip to Brighton to play the two courses under our reciprocal arrangement.
Thursday I played Pyecombe Golf Club situated in the rolling hills, unfortunately we didn't get very good weather and visibility was poor. A big shame as I am told the course has great views the whole way round. The club is very friendly everybody stopped to ask where we were from and said we would enjoy our day out here, obviously very proud of their course.
The course is a tough walk and there are some steep hills but even that and the weather didn't stop me enjoying the course. The ground was similar to ours and drains very well through the winter months.
The greens had plenty of character and slope and I can imagine them being very tricky and fast during the summer months.
There are a few tight tree lined tee shots and also a few holes where the driver should be left in the bag and positional play is needed.
I thoroughly enjoyed my round and would recommend you all make a visit to the club and take up the great opportunity of the 1902 arrangement as part of your membership.
Friday we played at The Dyke club situated a few miles from Pyecombe and close to Brighton town centre. We had much better weather for the round so managed to get a few pictures. Still a little hilly and drains very well, but a much easier walk than the previous day which was greatly appreciated.
This time we were able to see the great views the course had of the hills and many more golf courses in the area.
The course is much more open than Pyecombe and allows you to hit a lot more drives from the tee, but when you get to the greens it becomes much tougher , the greens where immaculate running fast and very true with a lot of slope, I can only imagine how much this will protect the course in the summer months.
Again everyone at the course seemed very friendly and welcoming; make sure you take advantage of this great offer next year and book up your rounds.
There are many more golf courses as part of your reciprocal membership which I am yet to play, a list of these can be found on our website.
