Double Success for Links in the Junior Open
The Junior Open held at the Club on Monday was well supported with 41 junior golfers competing from 14 Clubs. The field included 8 from the Links. Junior Organiser, Jonny Sharkey, expressed satisfaction with the excellent attendance, especially considering that the event last year had to be cancelled because of lack of entries.
The Men's Captain, Ray Bolton and Ladies Captain, Diane McDonnell acted as starters, then presented the prizes later in the day.
For the first time in the history of the event there was a play-off for the Scratch Trophy between our Junior Captain, Jordie Allen (7 h'cap) and Joseph Timms (10 h'cap) from Nene Park. Both were tied on a gross 78 and had to play two extra holes to decide the winner. After a nervous opening hole down the 1st when both players halved in 6, Jordie gained the advantage at the 2nd extra hole to secure victory after his opponent had played into trouble near the green. 3rd place went to Callum Brookes from Saffron Walden with a gross 79.
There was more success for the Links players with 10 year old Teddy Hall scoring a nett 67 and reducing his handicap to below 28 to gain his CONGU recognition and to win the Handicap Cup. A great day for the Links junior section, well done to everyone who played.
