Ladies County Championships
The Ladies County Championships where held at St Ives last weekend. The qualifying rounds on the Friday of the three day event were played in warm conditions with a gentle breeze. The Links was well represented with Marcella Tuttle, Sarah Greenall, Jackie Ewing, Alex Gilbert and Edie Douglas all qualifying through to the final 16 players of the knockout stages.
Over the weekend the weather changed and conditions became very blustery and cold, a complete contrast to the previous days qualifying round. In the first round Jackie had to play fellow Links player Alex and won 4/2. Edie played Paula Ewing (St Ives) and lost 2 up. Sarah played Lesley Gilchrist (Gogs) and won 2/1 and Marcella played Roz Irons (Brampton) and won 3/2. In the second round on Saturday afternoon Sarah beat Paula Ewing and Marcella beat fellow 1st team player Jane McGuffog on the 19th. Jackie lost to Jade Guest a young up and coming player from the Gogs. All this unfortunately meant that Marcella and Sarah had to play each other in the semi-final on the Sunday morning with Marcella securing a hard fought victory on the 18th. The match was nip and tuck all the way with neither player being more than 1 up at any point. Marcella then played Tabitha Brain, a 23 year old 2 handicapper from the Gogs in the final. After a fairly close front 9 Tabitha began to ease ahead over the closing stretch and won the championship on the 17th.
Marcella commented: "It was pleasing to get to the final for the second time but it's an increasing challenge to beat the younger generation"!
Sarah, Jackie and Marcella have been selected to play for the County Ladies 1st team and will be playing in County Week which is taking place at Chigwell Golf Club, Essex from 22 - 26 June. The team would welcome support from Newmarket members.
The strength of the ladies golf continues to flourish at the Links, well played Marcella and to everyone who took part.
Bank Holiday Mixed
Once again the Bank Holiday Mixed competition was well supported with all participants having a great afternoon's golf. The winning pair was Men's Captain Ray Bolton partnered by Marcella Tuttle who managed to pip Janey Redman and John Yuill into second spot.
