Captain's Ball - Friday
Men's Captain Ray Bolton and Ladies Captain Diane McDonnell welcomed 140 Members and Guests to the Summer Ball on Friday 3rd July when a great time was had by all. The evening began with a champagne reception with added drama as guests watched Andy Murray qualify for the next round of the Wimbledon Championship.
An excellent buffet meal served by Dennis and his team, with the customary involvement of Diane and the bar team, put everyone in the right frame of mind for the dancing to follow. 'Now Wash You Hands' a local Group headed by lead vocalist James Nicholas provided a range of topical songs adapted for the Golf Club, which ensured the dance floor was fully utilised through the whole evening until the event finished around 1am. A first class evening all round.
Captains Junior Competition - Saturday
16 Juniors took part in the Captain's Prize for Juniors which was won by Junior Captain Jordie Allen with a score of 40 pts. After the competition the players enjoyed a burger and Chips lunch.
Captain's Day - Sunday
Men's Captain Ray Bolton was on duty at 4am, ably assisted by Vice Captain John Tuttle, to make arrangements to welcome 159 Members to an early morning tot of Brandy or Whisky before teeing off from 5am in the Captain's Day Annual Stableford Competition. As has been the case for a number of years, the first to play were Ian Pountain, Tony Havers and Mike Darnell, with Tony setting the tone for a lot of good golf throughout the day with a Hole in One at the 12th. Ray, was superbly supported by Ladies Captain, Diane McDonnell and a team of Ladies who provided BBQ refreshments at the 11th with Adam Ranner on hand to deal with the liquid side needs in the cabin.
Ladies Captains Day - Tuesday
On Tuesday it was the turn of the ladies with Lady Captain Dianne welcoming the ladies to the 1st tee with the sounds of the sixties echoing out in the background. It was a great fun occasion and judging by the smiles on the faces of everyone all had a great time.
Thank you Ray and Dianne
I would like to say a big thank you to both Ray and Dianne who have both worked exceptionally hard to continue the traditions of the club on Captains week and provide fun events for all the members to enjoy. These occasions take a lot of effort and planning, you should both be very proud of how things have worked out this week.
Jonny passes his PGA exams!
Jonny received good news on Friday when he passed his final year exams from his PGA course and is now a fully qualified member of the PGA. This is the culmination of a three year course run by Birmingham University covering a variety topics required to be a successful golf professional. He will now attend an awards ceremony at Birmingham University later in the year. Well done Jonny.
Tony has a hole in one on Captains Day
Tony Havers had his first hole on Captains Day at the 12th hole. Playing with Mike Darnell and Ian Pountain, none of whom saw the ball go in the hole, they began looking for Tony's ball in the bushes at the back of the green and it wasn't until Tony tended the flag from his playing partners that he noticed his ball at the bottom of the cup. Playing in the twos competition Tony was able to claim £445 from the Hole in One fund, which went along way to compensate for his rather large bar bill. Congratulations Tony.
Bryan celebrates a big birthday on Captains Day
Passed Captain Bryan Short celebrated a big birthday on Captains Day and was presented with gifts and best wishes from his playing partners on the first tee. He was also seen shaking out a few moves on the dance floor at the Captains Ball on Friday. Congratulations Bryan.
Rob and the Greenstaff team
A big thank you to Rob and his team for presenting the course in such good order at a very busy time of year for the club. The extra demands put on the greenstaff at this time of year can easily be taken for granted as they start so early and are out of sight when the golfers get on the course. Congratulations to John May one of our assistant greeenkeepers who has just completed 25 years service at the club. To mark the occasion he was presented with a watch by the Club Chairman Peter Bush at a special presentation at Sundays' Trophy presentation. Congratulations John.
The Pictures show Rob giving the final preparations to the 18th green Captains Day and John May receiving his gift from Peter Bush.
